ORIGINS
Vile Methods was born out of a conviction that the Church’s greatest work happens when it embraces bold, creative, and sometimes downright disruptive ways of embodying the Gospel. Founded by Rev. Dr. Tyler Kaufmann, an ordained minister in the United Methodist Church, Vile Methods is more than a platform—it’s a movement reclaiming the spirit of early Methodism: a willingness to be “more vile” if it means bringing good news to the margins.
Tyler’s passion for unconventional ministry took shape during his doctoral studies at Portland Seminary under Rev. Dr. Leonard Sweet, where he explored Semiotics, Church, and Culture alongside the academic field of creativity research. His dissertation, Vile Methods: Bridging Divides and Expanding Churches' Understanding of Creativity, examined how churches can unleash their creative potential to heal communities and bridge deep social divides.
Vile Methods exists to equip and inspire those who feel called to the edges—where faith meets innovation, where tradition shakes hands with disruption, and where the Church refuses to settle for the status quo.
